چکیده

Z. Naturforsch. 37a, 294-304 (1982); received October 1, 1981 With the aim of using rotating plasmas (driven b y j x B o r E x B forces) for isotope separation, several experimental configurations have been studied and theory has been developed with respect to numerical models, the Alfven ionization limit, D'Angelo's shear instability, while turbulence was suggested qualitatively only. A more detailed study of the limit of laminar flow is presented taking into account the magnetic anisotropy of viscosity and interaction with neutrals. In all cases of experiments, the Reynold's numbers are below critical values of 104 by at least a factor 100. The pessimistic conclusions of Boeschoten for his experiment can therefore not be shared with respect to the turbulence problems. The published cases of isotope separation by rotating plasmas are then discussed extensively.

Rotation and instabilities for isotope and mass separation

Rotating plasmas have the potential to offer unique capabilities for isotope and mass separation. Among the various electric and magnetic field configurations offering mass separation capabilities, rotating plasmas produced through static or oscillating fields are shown to be a leading candidate for tackling the unsolved problem of large-scale plasma separation. The successful development and d...

Wave-driven countercurrent plasma centrifuge

A method for driving rotation and a countercurrent flow in a fully ionized plasma centrifuge is described. The rotation is produced by radiofrequency waves near the cyclotron resonance. The wave energy is transferred into potential energy in a manner similar to the α channeling effect. The countercurrent flow may also be driven by radiofrequency waves. By driving both the rotation and the flow ...

Isotope effects on turbulent transport and entropy transfer processes in toroidal plasmas

In this article, additional discussions on the nonlinear entropy transfer between turbulence and zonal flows are given for the isotope ion mass effects on the trapped-electron-mode (TEM) driven turbulent transport shown in Ref. 1. Spectral analyses with the triad entropy transfer function reveal that the case with heavier isotope ions indicates a relatively smaller negative transfer (from zonal...

Isotope effect and multiscale physics in fusion plasmas.

The mechanism governing the impact of the mass isotope on plasma confinement is still one of the main scientific conundrums facing the magnetic fusion community after more than thirty years of intense research. We have investigated the properties of local turbulence and long-range correlations in hydrogen and deuterium plasmas in the TEXTOR tokamak. Experimental findings have shown a systematic...
